VMX license (virtual environment backup)
VMX is the cheaper alternative to Veeam, and is pretty much feature compatible with it. VMX has built-in support for a few things that Veeam doesn't do well, like backing up to the cloud (such as Amazon S3 and Glacier.)
VMX is licensed based on the number of sockets in your hosting environment, so it almost always works out cheaper. If you are running a small virtual environment (even the free version of ESX), this is definitely what you want to buy for your backups.
|Professional Edition||Backup to tape, or disk (Linux, FreeBSD, Windows, ESX), file level restore, backup verification, single-user interface. Includes licenses for 4 sockets, with the option to buy more (see below)|
|Enterprise Edition||Instant recovery of VMs, multi-user interface, backup encryption, backup to cloud, replication. Includes licenses for 6 sockets, with the option to buy more (see below).|
VMX can backup VMware and Hyper-V.
This is also known as "VM Explorer". Full details are in the Quickspecs document.
